Baga

Grape VarietyThe main grape of the Barriada region of Portugal. Also grown in the Dão and Ribatejo regions. Known for its high acidity and tannins, it produces wines capable of aging well.
BarceloGrape VarietyThis grape produces white wines that are fairly robust, fruity with a hint of lemon. The rosé ranges in colour and are fresh and fruity. Sparkling wines are produced in white and rosé and range from "Brut" to "Medium Dry".
BastardoGrape VarietyA grape used in the production of Port wine, prized for its high sugar levels. It is also being experimented with on a small scale to make table wines.
BoalGrape VarietyName given to many different Portuguese grapes. On the island of Madeira it goes by Bual and is used in the wines of that region.
Borrado das MoscasGrape VarietyIn the Dão region, this white grape is known as Bical. It has good acidity and is used in both table and sparkling wines.

Fernão PiresGrape VarietyA white grape variety found in the Ribatejo, where it can produce nice oak aged and botrytized wines. Also known as Maria Gomes where it is found widely planted in the Bairrada region.

FrescoCoolA "cool" wine usually denotes a young wine that reflects it's qualities  through a pleasant sensation of freshness.
FrutadoFruityA wine that has the aroma and taste of fresh fruit. This term applies especially to young wines.
GarrafeiraAgedThe term used for wines that cause crisp and pleasant taste and olfactory sensationsA reserva red wine aged at least two years in a barrel and one year in a bottle; a white wine aged at least six months in a barrel and six months in a bottle.
GenerosoGenerousRich in alcohol, which causes pleasant feelings of well-being.
GordoFatThis is the term used to describe a greasy wine that slides easily down the throat due to its high content of glycerin.
JovemYoungMany wines should be drunk young, when they are more lively and have a fruity aroma and flavour. The vast majority of white wines and a considerable amount of reds should be drunk within their first five years.
LimpidezClarityThis is a quality that the consumer particularly appreciates but that presents the producer with a difficult problem to solve because each necessary operation that guarantess this desired clarity also makes the wine lose some of its aroma and bouquet.

Moscatel de SetúbalGrape Variety/Wine TypeMoscatel, the Portuguese name for Muscat. Used mainly for the sweet wines of Setúbal though can produce nice dry versions. Very fragrant and can be found with skin colour of gold to rose, to black. Very versatile and grown widely throughout the world.
Mourisco TintoGrape VarietyOne of the lesser Port wine grape varieties, known for making palish tart table wines when used as a mono-cast.

PeriquitaGrape VarietyPortuguese word for Parakeet, this is a synonym for the grape Mortágua.

QuintaRanch of qualityIn wine terms producers are permitted to use this expresion if their wines are entitled to a DOC designation. The term Quinta can be used by any farm producing a product of quality. The French equivalent of this term is "chateau" and "domaine".
RamiscoGrape VarietyRed grape variety from the Colares region where due to sandy soils it does not need to be grafted to prevent Phylloxera damage.
RedondoRoundedA rounded wine is one that is harmonious and has enough richness in alcohol and glycerin, however without excessive acidity. It is always an excellent wine..

Reserva

Superior quality wine of a single vintage which has experienced aging in barrel, usually french or american oak, or in bottle.
RobustoRobustA wine that is robust gives the impression of being imposing, vigorous, rich in alcohol and which fills the mouth.
RolhaCorkyPortugal is the worlds largest producer of cork and it's wines use cork stoppers extensively, but in most cases the finest quality and corked wines are rare.
RosadoRoséPortuguese Rosés are reknown for being aromatic and fruity.
RufeteGrape VarietyEarly ripening red grape vine used in Port production. Also used in the Spanish region of Salamanca.
SécoDryA wine can be considered dry if sugar levels are less than 50 grammes per Litre, 1 gramme per cm2.

Prized for it's high quality juicewhiche is rich, very aromatic, concentrated & complex. Ages very well.
TrajaduraGrape VarietyWhite grape that adds body and alcohol to the wines of Vinho Verde.
VelhoOldIn general wines are considered to be "old" wines when their age is between 5 and 15 years old. Ageing decreases the roughness of the wine and releases the bouquet.
VerdeGreenIt's a common belief that Vinho Verde is called green because of it's inmaturity, however white Vinho Verdes do exhibit green tinges.
VerdelhoGrape VarietyWhite grape grown on the Island of Madeira and a component in those wines. May be relative of Gouveio found in the Douro region.
Verdelho TintoGrape VarietyA darker skin version of Verdelho.
Vinho VerdeGreen WineWine from the north of Portugal meaning "green wine" that for the most part is white but also has red varieties. It is mainly straw in colour but some have a suggestion of slight green. They classify as a semi-sparkling wine and have a slightly biting or prickling quality and a refreshing twang. The vines are kept clear of the ground by being draped on trees or specially constructed trellises. These wines traditionally have a lower alcohol content but newer brands who look to foreign markets producer wines with higher alcahol.
ViosinhoGrape VarietyCrisp white wine producing grape grown in the Douro and Trás-de-Montes regions.
V.Q.P.R.D.Grape VarietyThis is a classification which must meet European quality wine standards and means "Quality Wine Produced in a Guaranteed area of Origin". In the superior category are the wines known as Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC), then wines which present the indication "Regulated Provenance" (IPR).
